A great thing happened last week: my friend Goran visited me from Sweden. We last saw each other when we were 18 years old. 41 years ago. We visited old Detroit stomping grounds, including the DIA:

jess2

This is my friend Jess Constable, a jeweler and writer, now living in Chicago. She worked in the store several years ago while finishing undergrad school at UofM. I believed in her then….and even more so now! Her jewelry business has grown by leaps and bounds plus she’s developed a blog that reaches out to people world-wide: makeundermylife.com.

Every now and then, Jess calls on me for advice on how to get through some of the little and the not-so-little steps she’s taken since her move to Chicago. She’s become so successful, I often forget our age difference and thus the life experiences I am able to share with her.

Today Jess honored me by asking me to participate in the “Design Your Life” portion of her blog. This is what she posted today:

http://makeundermylife.com/design-your-life-vicki-of-heavenly-metal/

Here’s one readers reaction:

Jess – Today’s ‘Design Your Life’ made my morning and re-affirmed some of the things I’ve been thinking already. The last line really resonated with me: Be happy. Get a dog. Like your work. Don’t waste your time with people you don’t completely love and respect. Don’t burden yourself with the things that didn’t happen.

Vicki seems like a wonderful mentor. Thank you so much for sharing this. Erin

Wow! What a sweet note on a cold wintry day. Thank you Jess!

snow days!

It’s been beautiful and magical with the first snowfall of the winter. Lucy has been enjoying it from a warm distance, sitting under the heat vent, watching the world go by outside her window at work.

It’s a tough life for her, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tonight she made it clear to me she’s had enough of the snow and is ready to go outside without getting her feet cold.

sunday shopping spree

What a weekend! The whirlwind of New York City came to a screeching halt when I got back to town, back to work, back into the day-to-day. But I did manage to get in some peeps-time Saturday afternoon with dear friends Susan Wineberg and Lars Bjorn, who have been hosting a once-a-month Saturday brunch for about 35 years. Susan and I shared walls in a beautiful Victorian home on E. Ann for ten years, back in our wrinkle-free days. It’s comforting that they still hold vigil for brunch friends after all these years!

Check out Susan’s recycled necklace made from paper clips and plastic bottle safety seals created by a real Ann Arbor artist!

Sunday was spent working the aisles with Pnut at an apparel show in metro-Detroit featuring Chicago showrooms. Our day began, well…..so funny! While making a gas and coffee stop, I was accosted by the clerk who came at me the instant I walked in the door. He would not take his hands off me….even when he thought Pnut and I were a couple! When he found out we were not that kind of “partners”, he went all out trying to pull me close to him and get my phone number! Whew, I haven’t been cruised like that in a good twenty years!

gasstation_opt

We knew he was harmless and it gave us the good laugh we needed for a long day of hard work ahead of us!

The show was terrific. In store for you, oh Heavenly Metal fans: lacey dresses, tunics, and t’s. Adorable skirts. Spring scarves. Colorful wallets. Comfy crinkle cotton tunics and scarves. Springy wooden ships cotton sweaters. More Zashi mermaid skirts!

hazel_opt

It was a long day. A good day. Pnut learned alot about the behind-the-scenes of Heavenly Metal. And I found some great new things to make you very very happy!

Here’s what’s in store for you right now:

And look who flew back to Detroit with me! It’s Steve and April, owners of metro-Detroit stores Catching Fireflies, catching up from their show in the handmade section of NYIGF! What a perfect way to end my trip, getting to hang out with two truly nice peeps.

Well that’s it, folks! Next NYIGF: August…and I can’t wait! But before I sign off,  I have to tell you: it took Lucy over two hours to settle down, she was so so so happy for my return! Her grin was just precious…and I was too busy luvin’ her up to get a picture….but you probably get the picture anyway! Now she and I are all caught up…and so are you! Come on in to catch up in person!
