victoria mackenzie-childs and more: day three nyigf

day three.

first off: cindy and I had a great day today. we slept in. stopped at the corner market for bananas and frappucinos. then, we set a goal to get through all through piers in one day. check this out: the three piers total over 750 showrooms, at least 5 miles of walking. every aisle on every floor of the convention is 15 miles. whoa baby. but we did it! we did it all! but, oh baby: my legs are feeling it!

I’m gonna save the goodies from the day for a moment. right now it’s evening, we’ve been hanging out at the hotel bar after the show ended at 6pm, too too tired to go out tonight, drinking happy hour drinks, having dinner, and meeting other gift show attendees. john nelson just joined us, done with his day of work in brooklyn on special effects for sorcerer’s apprentice. here’s a glimpse of the last three hours, hanging at the bar sharing stories and more:

now I’ll show you a few things I discovered today! remember mackenzie-childs socks and homegoods? very hip, very collectible. they changed their name to victoria-richard. they are a happy couple selling happy homegoods and jewelry. here’s what I have on order: teeny lipstick/cellphone/whatever bags called “sock-it” because, yes, they are kids socks on a string! really fun!

here’s victoria mackenzie-childs,  the diva herself:

also coming are victoria’s signature jewelry pieces. they are playful, colorful, and fab!

more fun found at the show: 4×4 squares of reclaimed wood with letters painted on them.

new clothing! aloe-infused anti-microbial fabric that is soft and stretchy, light and comfy. this photo does not do justice but trust me, they’re begging to be worn!

yoga-clothes_opt1

one more pic for you, because we have to pack our bags and head back to the show for a few last minute orders.

these are notebooks made entirely from reclaimed paper. they are precious designs and all about reuse and recycle, from sukie designs.

lots lots lots more to share with you, but I must keep some suspense, eh?

new work/new stories! baggallini! wasabi jewelry!

vick & cindy conquer day two of new york gift show!

but first: mmmmm...comfy beds in a quiet hotel room=good night’s sleep=re-powering for another long hard day of trekking the aisle.

and second: a huge breakfast and then off to the races, with a plan in hand: conquer the rest of javits pavilion so we can spend a day and a half conquering the showrooms at the piers.

end of the day: we almost got there, but petered out very near the finish line for the day. long hard day. good work got done. but we had to get ready for our night out at carnegie hall!

but, what fun reuniting with with artists and vendors. our first stop was beth mueller who makes the sweet milk bottle vases I carry. so, beth fans! get ready: new work is comin’!

bethmueller_opt

she’s so sweet! did you know she used to live in ann arbor and was part of the original 16 hands gallery? we like beth’s work.

across the hall from beth is a booth of the sweetest and coolest t’s. original feel-good artwork by jo dee foster on yummy soft burnout cotton t-shirts. I didn’t order because our michigan economy isn’t quite ready, but they’ll be coming when you beg for them!

further down the aisle is our friend jill pearson from wasabi. boy o boy did we have a good time! I put together a whole new story of earrings and necklaces from her spring ‘09 line. y’all are just gonna love it!

wasabijill_opt1

aw, thanks for approving my selection jill! I can’t wait for my customers to approve it too!

wasabi_opt
ok, get ready girls! baggallini’s got a brand new bag!

bagcloseup_opt

meet ann and dixie, the brains behind baggallini. and meet brussels, a backpack/shoulder bag/cross shoulder bag. she’s big and bold!

I’m a tired puppy. more enticements tuesday evening. oh, did I mention we were guests of maestro ken kiesler at carnegie hall? he guest-conducted students and faculty from the manhattan school of music in an evening of really moving music from grieg and strauss. beautiful way to end a long long day. thank you maestro.

hey…leave me a comment! are you loving’ what we’re finding? any special requests? are you getting excited?

eric silva! kathryn arnett! maruca design! all at the new york gift show!

new york gift show. javits convention center. nyc. day one.

got up this morning at 4am to catch a 7am flight from dtw to lga with friend and neighbor cindy weatherbee who enjoys tackling the show with me.

tired. excited. hungry. really really hungry. the creperie I rely on for my nourishment at the javits center has no power. no power=no grill=no food. but the work must be done! no food for the travel and shopping weary.

I walk up down the aisles and aisles of artists and vendors, looking for new work, looking for my friends, wishing I could get my spinach crepe. and . . . lo and behold . . . who appears before me but kathryn arnett! the recycled metal artist whose work inspired me to name my store heavenly metal! my customers have been big fans of kathryn’s work since I opened my gallery/gift shop, and I admit I’ve run low on her work these past few months.

but . . . I now have a barnyard full of recycled metal artwork (hearts, flowers, wall art, key holders, magnets) on order to make your homes springy cheery and bright!

I walk on down the aisle, stop to talk to a jeweler friend . . . turn around to the other side of the aisle, see a display booth that looks all too familiar, thinking “whoa, somebody did an amazing job of replicating eric silva’s art fair booth“, when I realize OMYGOD it is eric silva! here at the wholesale show! eric silva! in new york! well, after I pinched myself (and eric’s cheek) a few times, I settled down to writing up an order that is going to make all you eric silva fans very very happy!

so, here’s how it’s working for eric. he has three fabulous, organized employees who are helping him get his act together! no more wishy washy eric. his 4th child was just born two weeks ago: he’s ready for the big time. here’s heidi in the  booth we in ann arbor love to visit during art fair. she’s making sure it all comes together.

ericsilva_opt

I’m really happy now. hungry, oh yeah, but having a great time! the creperie is still out of power. there’s more orders to be placed. so onward and upward through the aisles until I come upon my friend angela schuster from maruca design. she’s the woman who keeps all smiling at the little boulder, colorado studio where the bags are designed, cut, and sewn by hand, then sold all over the country, including at heavenly metal — where they are one of the mainstays.

maruca_opt

all of you who have been collecting maruca bags over the years (and there are many of you I can think of as I sit in my hotel room writing this) are going to love love love the spring/summer fabrics and new styles. warm, colorful, just what we need to remind us that there is hope after minus 4 degrees for two months!

enuf of the show! dinner with old ann arbor friends john nelson (special effects director of ironman and gladiator) and gerhard schlansky (director of exhibits at the new-york historical society) and jewelers o-live and kathy frey (both from chicago) at a little hideaway on 9th avenue. a good day all around. some sleep time and ready to walk more ailes in the morning!

shopping news from chicago.

I must confess: I really enjoy attending trade shows. As some of you know, I don’t look forward to going (sometimes I even dread the impending travel and work)! But, I forget how much I enjoy discovering new treasures for my customers and how much fun I have reconnecting with vendors throughout the year.

I know many of you are waiting to hear what I’ve got in store for you. Here’s a sneak peak of a few things:

cotton sweaters from babette in orange, mustard, and smoke. very cute. very flattering.

black and white peace and love plastic bangles: cheap!

baby-butt soft faux leather handbags and hobo bags from melie bianco in great spring colors!

jersey assymetrical tanks and pima cotton sweaters and slouchy pants from planet.

dolman sleeve cotton peace t’s with a flair in sandwashed blue and black.

bottle-cap rings with sprinkles, flowers, and obama!

getting psyched?
there’s more: scarves scarves and more scarves! pretty cotton florals, gauzy indian prints, cotton peace in spring colors — scarves are the accessory for spring. I know you’ll be springing in to heavenly metal for yours!
